I have Windows 2000 professional and am in the UK.
When I go to windows update, the pages are in Chinese!
I have already checked my internet regional settings which are all correctly
set to Western Europe and English. I have never changed my language
preferences,that I am aware of.
If I type the URL it just defaults to Chinese.if I 'Google' for MS Update,it
also displays in Chinese.
I don't have a Chinese problem with any other web pages.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You have a question for Win2000 which you have asked in IE6 Browser????
You are using the web based discussion group which I am sure have a group
that covers Win2000 problems as there is also one here in msnewsgroups.
I would try there in that web group.

Thanks for your advice. However,I only mentioned my operating system because
I have seen so many people sending in queries, only to be asked what
operating system they are using, including at least two in this section.I
also mentioned that I had already checked the only language variant that I am
aware of in Win2000.
Also, as I am not a computer expert, I had assumed that it was IE6 browser
that took me to the web pages, because the Chinese is displayed on an IE6
page.If you cannot advise on this, perhaps someone else can.

Always a good idea to mention OS with any thread.
If saves asking before directing to more appropriate group.

Neither am I :-) :-) But mine is set to Unicode(UTF-8).
I am using IE6 but with XP.

You do not get your updates via your Start menu/or desktop short cut. I
appreciate that all methods must use IE.
But with my limited knowledge, it would appear to be Win2000 related if you
do not get chinese using IE in normal browsing.
Do any other MS sites come up in chinese. Is it just the updates.
There is a discussion group on the web interface you use, that deals with
all update problems.
If you cannot advise on this, perhaps someone else can.

I can go no further - it is not a prob. that I have seen pop up in the last
6 months. Have you tried a Google or Help and Support.
But hang around and see if someone else has a solution.
And please let us know if you do find the answer.
I am intrigued so will watch your thread.
Sorry if I have wasted your time.
All the best

Tools | Internet Options | Languages
Make sure English is at the top.

Hi QAntioch

Your input is appreciated and I have noted your comments.

I could not find a forum for Win2000 Professional among these discussion
groups.
I am aware of the method for setting languages in Win2000. It IS different
to other windows versions, because a language can be set directly from within
the operating system.

To give you an example of what happens, here is a scenario.

I go to www.microsoft.com by typing the URT directly into my browser.(ie.
avoiding using any existing links or shortcuts on my pc.)
So far so good. The correct page displays, in English.
I then click on Microsoft Update, and it is in Chinese.I only know it is
Chinese.
because the letters 'cn' appear at the end of the URL.

If I click on Office Update instead, the page is in English as normal, as
are all the other links that i have tried on the MS home page.

I don't know how this happened, and have found nothing in th knowledge base
relating to this.

If i don't receive any replies with possible solutions, I will call
Microsoft UK when it opens on Monday. Luckily Windows 2000 Pro still receives
telephone support.

Whatever happens, I will post the results.

Hi Frank,

Thanks, but I already checked that.
As I have stated in a previous posting, only MS update comes up in Chinese.
I have not had any problems with my OS since I installed it 3 years ago, or
with IE6. until recently I had my PC set to receive MS updates automatically,
but have now stopped this for fear I might receive something in Chinese!

Hi,
Browse to your Cookies folder. You will probably have to be able to see
hidden and system files//folders. Delete any/all cookies from microsoft. You
will lose any saved preferences related to Microsoft sites.

Hope this helps,

I SAID web based discussion groups - not HERE in newsgroups.
I believe you are currently posting in the web discussion group.
Try the below in any case.

http://support.microsoft.com/newsgr...g=microsoft.public.win2000.general&sloc=en-us

In addition, I dont know what goes on in the advanced etc settings of
Regional and Language settings, but there could be something there that has
changed.
