It may be possible that you may never find out why your computer did not
shut down properly.
You might be able to reproduce the not shut down properly phenomenon and
have a starting point on your quest to find out why your windows is not
shutting down properly.
If this is a new phenomenon on your computer, it could be related to a new
device that you plugged into your computer.
It could be a new driver that was installed. It could be a new application
that you installed or ran.
It could be an excess temperature related problem or a failing hard drive.

what could be the reason for this or how could i find out why?

with all the info you provided it's not going to be easy but here is a few.

Did you power it off or do a shut down?
did you lose power?

In short anytime you shut the PC off other than going to the start menu or
having your power button set to shut down you will get that error message the
next time you power up.

You missed the most obvious reasons

Power going out
or
hitting the power button to exit windows
"unexpected shut downs"
