Hallo all,

May I ask your expert help. I bought a new external USB
hard disk of TARGA company that has 40 GB capacity. I am
using Windows XP Home edition. And my computer is of 2.53
GHz speed, with Pentium 4, 256 MB RAM and USB 2.0 ports.
When I connect my hard disk it says, "one of the USB
devices has mal functioned. Windows cannot recognise it"
The manual says that no drivers need tobe installed for
XP and the computer does not detect a driver also from
CD. So now what can I do for this. Please help, as this
is a bit costly hard disk.

Sincerely
Benny

More information needed.

From what you have stated, the drive is malfuntioning, return for
replacement or refund.

Otherwise - try it in another computer and give us more information. Such
as - are you an administrator on the computer in question? When you used
the device on other computers, any strange reactions? Are you using any
other USB devices on the original PC?

Dear Shenan T. Stanley,

I am the administrator. The hard drive is detected on
anothe laptop, but only in the 'device manager' in
control panel, and not in 'my computer'. Mine also is
laptop. I am using also a usb mouse and scanner.

Did instructions come with the drive?
Have you initialized/formatted the drive yet using Disk Manager (this is not
required on all external drives, but it could be your problem)?

So what you are trying to say is that the drive is "detected" on another
machine, but doesn't work there either?
(If so - that REALLY sounds like a bad drive. If it doesn;t work on more
than one system the way it is supposed to work and you have no other known
trouble with the multiple systems you have tried it on, the problem must
be... the drive.)

No I have not formatted the hard drive. I have no
software to do it, as the hard disk is not detected by
Windows. I don't have Disk Manager or any other software.

It is shown as having 40 GB capacity, sometimes, and
sometimes on the 'Task bar' of the monitor, but not
always.

May be I should try to check it on a few more systems.

Benny
