My 12 months subscription to Trend ended a few days ago.
The question is what happens now? it still seems to be downloading
updates. Will this carry on indefinitely? What difference does it
make if i re subscribe?

Antivirus programs work by watching for virus-like characteristics and
activities. How does the program learn about all the new viruses that
are constantly being written? By downloading and installing new virus
definitions written by the antivirus program's maker. This is what the
subscription is for. Without a current subscription, you are actually
worse off than if you weren't running any av at all because you have a
false sense of security.

Renew your antivirus subscription. If you didn't like Trend's av, get
another full-featured av immediately. You will need to keep your
subscription to that different av current also.

I'm running the same AV software - how do you know your sub has ended? Is
there a warning, or an e-mail or something? I really can't remember when I
started the first year....

Antivirus programs work by watching for virus-like characteristics and
activities.

More to the point, they look for the existence of code snippets which,
when executed, would result in said behavior. This is not to say that
there aren't parts of an AV program that emulate the environment the
virus would execute in and actually look at behavior while it runs in a
sandbox. Most of the better AV programs do have emulation capabilities,
but it is usually used to run, in emulation, enough of the program so
that encrypted viruses decrypt themselves thus revealing the code
snippets it would be looking for.

I have often wondered about this too. I have been renewing mine for a number
of years. Of course, with renewal comes the ability to upgrade to new
versions for free too.

I have a suspicion that the anti-virus sig files will continue to download
indefinitely even without renewing your subscription. Although I don't
believe this is in writing or that Trend would acknowledge it.
