My statistics show Vista is a winner!

For the last seven days there have been many threads started on this forum.
For simplicity I rounded the number up to 500 and categorized all of them as
requests for assistance.

If you compare that number to 200,000 (the number of downloads allowed by
Microsoft according to some posters in this forum), there is less than one
percent (.25%) of the users having problems and posting to this forum. When
you consider some of those threads are from the same user and some are simply
comments, the number gets even lower.

I say that isn't too shabby for a pre-release version of an OS running
mostly unsupported applications! ;)

All kidding aside, the nay-sayers that predict doom and gloom shouldn't be
surprised when ma/pa go to a large box store next January and buy a system
pre-loaded with Vista using compatible hardware and apps and it works.

My feelings exactly. When Vista is installed on a machine with 100%
compatible hardware the experience should be very pleasing. Too many people
are installing on marginal hardware just to see what it is like. Then they
write a review or post here all that is wrong with Vista.

I take most of the negative comments with a pound of salt, as most of the
nay sayers do not post their inferior machine specs.

And, for the record, my motherboard and CPU are about 3 years old (though I
updated other components) and Vista, at this point, is more that "just
acceptable". I feel it is almost top notch.

I agree with Richard. My motherboard is also older. I have older hard
drives, printer, etc. My Vista works like a charm. I use it every day with
no complaints. Vista will work fine on older systems with an experienced
user. I would recommend that the casual user get a 100% compatible or
pre-loaded machine.

I too have an older machine, it is
emachines M6805 laptop
only changes from stock config
flashed bios to M6811 ver ( so it could see the 1 gig mem chip)
put in 7200 rpm drive 60 gig
changed cd rw to a nec dvd rw
This laptop is 3+ years old and gets a 3.4 index score
it has worked just about perfect through every build of CPP
it all just works (well hp printer didn't till 5744's drivers)
I even let my son install some games on vacation and most of them also
worked.
GTA
Bloodmoney
operation flashpoint
Quake 4

Errm, isn't your stats seriously flawed, in that you do not take into
account how many of those 200,000 downloaded post here...

I hope you're not involved in hypothesis testing of any kind in real life.
Your premise is seriously flawed.

Agreed - it is, in my opinion, a thorough winner.

Besides were it not so from launch we know that within 6 months it would be.

That's right. After all, who knows how many thousands of people who come
on here but seldom post because that ran across a posting that covered their
problem with Vista.

Richard,

I am running a Lenovo T43 Thinkpad and if you care to check the Lenovo site
you will see that this PC is a "Vista Ultimate Ready PC". Although sound
and Windows Media Centre worked fine here on Beta 2 and RC 1, both refused
to work properly under RC 2. I don't consider myself a nay sayer and would
personally like to see Vista succeed. But the fact of the matter is that
some of us with Vista compatible hardware are having problems and hope they
will be fixed in RTM.

In case you are wondering, RC 2 was installed first as an upgrade and then
as a clean install and the outcome was the same with both installs. It is
great that Vista is running perfectly on your box but don't assume that
those of us posting about problems are simply a bunch of nay sayers because
that is wrong! In my case I simply want Vista to work.

Kevin,

I was just on the Lenovo web site and all I see is that the T43 is that the
recommended operating system is Windows XP. Can you supply a link to the
"Vista Ultimate Ready PC" claim, as I was considering this notebook for
myself.

I'm using a T60 that belongs to the company I work for. I've been considering
installing RC2 just to see how it handles. The thing is built like a tank!

I kinda second PNutts: if you're not desperately trying
to save some bucks, then go with the T60. I'm using
one every day and I couldn't be happier. Even the ATi
x1300 card drives AeroGlass with all the nifty effects
nicely on a dual-monitor setup with a total of 2680x2074
pixels.

Oh, well here is our issue huh? The "naysayers" or those who don't like
vista, or are having problems with Vista, readily assume that since they are
having problems, everyone else is as well.
And you are right, there is no guarantee that all Vista users come to this
group and post. But how would this work? Take the number od posts, separate
by good or bad, divide by the number of people who are actually posting, and
you will have your more useful number. The good vice bad, in the Vista users
that have posted.

That would require a thorough read thought, to omit duplicates and the
random "Vista sucks!" or "Get a Mac!" post.

Just a thought

I agree that someone who buys a new machine with 100% compatible hardware
and software will be happy, until, they try to install some of their
inventory of software and hardware. Unless they are new to computing and
don't have an investment in other hardware and software they might not be so
happy. Also hope they don't buy the Vista64 version unless they are
prepared to replace most of their hardware. I did when xp x64 came out and
all works well on Vista64. Only about 20% of my software will install, even
though all installed on x64.

I stand corrected, "Vista Premium Ready" not Vista Ultimate Ready as I
indicated earlier. My point was that the T43 hardware is indicated to be
compatible with Vista. For sound and TV to stop working right in RC2 (may
have been a driver problem) when it worked well in Beta 2 and RC1 was a
little unsettling. I'm sure it will be resolved though in RTM.

In terms of the T43, great laptop with no problems. I am very happy with
it. Miss the driver for my fingerprint reader when running Vista RC1 but
I'm sure Lenovo will get on to that fairly soon. While RC2 was unsuccessful
RC1 has been running fairly well on the T43. Performance seems on par with
XP.

With TV, do you mean that S-Video out stopped working?
If so, that sounds like a driver issue. I'm looking forward to
ATi providing us with a better driver than the one for RC1

Regards,

Kai-Uwe.

I'm using a Happauge WinTV PVR USB2 device. I suspect you are right that it
is likely a driver.problem but odd that it works fine in Beta 2 and RC1 and
the problem only showed up in RC2. As I said earlier I'm sure it will be
resolved in RTM or shortly thereafter.
