freeze until i bring up my task manager can some one tell me why and how to
fix it?

Hello,

Could you please reply with some of your system specs - in particular the
amount of RAM. If you right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties",
the RAM and CPU info should be displayed.

It sounds like you may be running low of RAM. Depending on your needs you
should have a minimum of 256 MB - however 512 MB ~ 1 GB will yeild better
performance. The task manager will display the amount of RAM available under
the performance tab. Check to see how much RAM is left.

Yes, that's generally correct for most people.

However that is not correct. Although a fair number of people may be helped
by going to 512MB, not everybody will, and it's comparatively rare that
going above 512MB will improve performance.
How much memory you need depends on what apps you run, but almost everyone
needs at least 256MB for decent performance. For some people, for example
those who edit large photographic images, more than 256MB--even much
more--can be required for good performance.

If you are currently using the page file significantly, more memory will
decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your performance. If you are
not using the page file significantly, more memory will do nothing for you.

Go to http://billsway.com/notes_public/winxp_tweaks/ and download
WinXP-2K_Pagefile.zip and monitor your pagefile usage. That should give you
a good idea of whether more memory can help, and if so, how much more.

Wow...you have tonnes of RAM and a good CPU. I'm running an Athlon 64 3200+
w/ only 1024 MB of RAM and have very good performance.

Have you checked your system for virus, spyware, adware, etc...? Have you
defragged your disk, ran a disk clean uP, etc...? Also, try checking the
available system resources when you start haveing freezes. See how much of
the CPU is being used or if there are any running processes/programs taking
up alot of RAM or CPU (check this in the task manager).

Also, how is health of your hard drive. A faulty/dieing hard drive can
cause major performance issues (page file, booting, etc...). Does Windows
take a long time to load also?

my computer is 5 months old i check for adware, viruses, and spyware once a
weekand also defrag my harddrive once a month. and when i check the system
status its all normal
