My screen is popping

My Hitachi SuperScan Elite 751 is doing this weird thing where every now and
then
it makes a little noise and the picture starts rapidly shrinking like it has
died and then
it pops back out. It isn't exactly like a degauss. What could be
happening??

A component(s) in the high voltage / horizontal deflection circuitry is
probably failing.

My old one did the same thing until it did it's last pop, so that was when
it finally died. My suggestions would be to go look for a new monitor :-)

That started happening to my monitor after it was about
1 1/2 years old. There would be a loud POP! or SNAP!
that sounded like an outdoor bug zapper and the picture
would collaps to a white spot in the center of the screen
and then gradually recover. I eventually theorized that it
was dust shorting out the CRT's high voltage circuitry, I
went about seeing what I could do to get the dust out.
But getting the dust out of the case is tricky unless you
open the case (hard to do). I used a combination of a
pulsing air pump to direct blasts of air through the vent
holes with the hose nozzle and a vacuum claner to suck up
the dust-laden air. And after I cleaned the dust out of the
case, the POP!'s stopped happening.

Using a can of compressed air will work as long as you are careful and DO
NOT stick the small straw into the vent holes, only just outside of them...I
really wouldn't recommend taking the cover off of the monitor though because
this is very dangerous! I am a certified Computer Technican and we are told
never to take the cover off of the monitor unless you know what you are
doing.

Kathy
