my screen goes blank when i log off

I have windows xp home and i know how to log off properly. On my new dell i go to log off and the screen goes black and nothing happens. It is still on but i can't wake it up. The only thing I can do is hold the power button in until it shuts off and then i have to restart. HELP!!!
 
Since it is a new Dell computer it is their problem. Call Dell support.
