I bought a Dell inspiron 2200 laptop about 6 months ago. Two days ago, my
"right-shift" key started to work like a "control" key.

I ran all types of diagnotic tool (antivirus, antispyware, disk-drive error
check) including playing with the accessibility feature in the Control Panel.
I even uninstalled the keyboard but nothing seem to work.

Have an idea of the problem might be????

Dell says that i need to replace the keyboard, eventhough it is just 5
months old.

The age of the hardware is irrelevant. The laptop is under warranty;
have Dell come out and replace the keyboard. It only takes a few
minutes to do.

According to dell, the laptop is no longer under warranty and that it would
cost about $159-$199 to send it to service center for repair.

If it is really just the keyboard that is broken, you should be able to buy
a keyboard off ebay for a fraction of the price

Then resort to external keyboard?

This may sound weird, but I used to have this problem. Pressing [Ctrl] +
[Esc] would fix the problem for me. Then my shift key worked normally again.
However, for me, it was always my left Shift key, since I never use the
right one, I don't know/remember if the right one got stuck too.

I thought you said the machine was only 5 months old. Did you buy it
used?

In any case, buy a replacement keyboard for that specific model laptop
and have Dell send it to you. It will come with replacement
instructions and you can either replace the keyboard yourself or have a
local tech do it for far less than that cost.

Replacing an Inspiron keyboard is very easy.

The laptop "is" actually 5 months old and I could not believe it when the
dell rep. told me that they would not fix my brand new laptop. Anyway, I
guess I will have to fix the problem myself. What's funny is that they even
give me the link where they describe how to replace the keyboard once I buy a
new one.

As to buying an external keyboard, forget about it. I am full-time student
and I am constantly on the move. I need mobility (+ the control+esc key
combination did not work).
