My program is looking for a .ost file that doesn't exist.

I have a blackberry that I am synching with my Outlook 2003.
Outlook now won't work. I get my e-mails on my phone, but I can't open the
program on my computer. It says "the file ...outlook.ost is in use and could
not be accessed. Close any application that is using this file and try
again." There is no application using the file. I don't know why the
program is pointing at the file (I think it should be pointing at a .pst file
instead). I can't even find it on my computer in Search.

Based on what else I've read, I've found the file, but it won't let me delete
it saying that the file is in use. What else would be accessing this file?

With Outlook closed, go to Control Panel | Mail (if you are using Control
Panel in Category Mode, the Mail applet is under the User Accounts category),
and click Show Profiles. Examine the properties of your profiles and see if
the .OST file in question is attached to one of them. If so, remove it from
the profile. Outlook should start normally now. If it can't find a .PST it
will ask you to find one...you will need to search within hidden folders in
Windows to find .PST files.

I went where you suggested. The e-mail account did not list the .ost file in
question. It listed two .pst files

Did you search for the .OST file too? It would probably be in a hidden
folder also. Then again, if Outlook can't find it, it must not matter where
it is.

Try creating a new profile from scratch and tell Outlook to always start
with that profile -- see if that helps.
