hello

i have noticed that on one of my XP machines, the Prefetch folder within
Windows has gone... i replaced it with an empty folder of the same name but
windows did not use it

HOW do i reconfigure my windows to use prefetch again? we have no idea how
we might have turned it off

Hi, Steph!
1) Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
2) In the right panel, you'll find a DWORD value called
"EnablePrefetcher". Double click on that value.
3) Enter 3 from the keyboard, then click OK.
This will set the Prefetcher to its default value.

Alternatively, you could use a freeware utility which will allow you to
set the Prefetch Parameters without editing the registry directly. It
is called "Windows XP Prefetch Clean And Control" and is available from

In addition to Robert's advice, go to Services and set Task Scheduler to Automatic.

result here
