my pictures do not display when inserted in word. what causes thi

Pictures do not display in WORD

Frames appear but no actual picture. This also happens with clipart. What
is the fix?
 
The location of the option varies with Word version,
Word 2007 - Word Options > Advanced > Show Document Content > uncheck
Picture Placeholders
Earlier - Tools > Options > View > uncheck Picture Placeholders
