All the jpgs in My Pictures and it subfolders were corrupted somehow
by some program. The jpgs were rendered completely unviewable.

For a while, I thought it might be a problem viewing them, but
experimenting confirmed that view jpgs DOES work and its all the jpgs
in My Pictures that were mysteriously corrupted. All were last
modified within a few minutes of each other at a time I don't recall
doing anything unusual on the computer.

Afterwards, no program can read them-- i even tried uploading to other
computers, but no other computers can view them either. Miraculously,
a backup I made just 12 hours before they all went bad was able to
restore them, but I obviously want to prevent this from happening
again.

I have no idea what program could have done the corrupting. Programs
I used about that time include Nero Burning Rom, MS Photostory, and
Moodlogic. I also have (and have regularly used) Norton Systemworks.

PLease help! Any ideas?

Thanks

I don't *think* any of the programs you listed would have caused it...the
only thing I can think of is a virus (run a virus scanner with the _latest_
updates - reference/signature files ect.) or perhaps hard drive corruption
(scandisk may help in identifying this)...
