My Pictures browse problem

I'm running WinXP Home Edition.
Recently I notice that if I view the My Pictures folder (or sub-folders
thereof) in Explorer the machine comes to almost a standstill. This occurs
when I have the View option set to Thumbnails or Filmstrip.
Furthermore, if I use a Browse option (in various softwares) prior to
selecting an image to insert or open or whatever, the same problem occurs
and often crashes the application (especially Photoshop).
I've configured Explorer to use Windows Picture & Fax Viewer rather than PS7
to open the images but it makes no difference.
It wasn't always like this. What may have happened

Try the following:

Right click on a .jpg file and choose...Properties.
Click the Photoshop Image tab and uncheck the
"Generate Thumbnails" button, then click OK.
