My PC won't sleep

My freshly installed Vista PC won't go to sleep.

When I try, it goes through all of the sleep motions but when the screen
eventually blanks my PC appears to reset (it doesn't really reset since I am
still logged in) and return to the sign-in screen.

I presume that it's a piece of hardware prevening sleep mode.

What are the mostly likely candidates? TV cards? Wireless network card?

Is there a workaround apart from removing the offending piece of hardware?

Cheers.

Bobby

Could be any of them, TV card is a likely one though as the drivers for it
are probably not that great right now. What card is it?

Kworld DVB T-100.

Running compatibility mode (not Vista) driver.

But I couldn't get my PC to sleep prior to installing driver for this card
so I think it's a hardware issue - not software.

Hardware is pretty much benign without drivers. The drivers are the usual
cause. As long as you have the drivers to reinstall, you can delete the
suspect drivers one at a time in Device Manager and try hibernate in
between.

Have a look in Power Options -> Change when the computer sleeps -> Change
advanced power settings. Under multimedia settings make sure the computer
is allowed to sleep, instead of entering away mode.

Bobby:
Two things that will effect the sleep mode are "wake from LAN" and a
wireless mouse or keyboard. Another thing is S3 with video has to be enabled
in the bios.

Dennis - I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. Could this be the problem?

Do you mean, I mustn't move the mouse or touch the keyboard? Or, do you mean
that wireless keyboard and mouse is an inherent problem?

John - Thanks for the feedback but my PC would not sleep *before* I
installed the (XP) driver for the TV card. So, if what you're saying is
true, it can't be the TV card.

Bobby:
I don't have a wireless keyboard or mouse to verify this, but based
on memory from a post a few months ago. The wireless mouse and keyboard
continually communicate with the computer causing sleep to fail. A quick
test if available is to unplug the wireless and use a standard PS2 or USB
mouse and keyboard then retest the sleep function.

Normally if it is a driver if will hang somewhere in the cycle while going
to sleep. Your problem seems more like some others we have had here where
it is starting to go to sleep and then receives some kind of wake signal.
Check your BIOS for any 'wake on' settings. This morning it was wake on
PCI another common one is wake on LAN where your always on internet
connection triggers it, there are others, check all in the BIOS and turn
them off.

Haha, I had the same problem and that fixed it. It was the 'multimedia
settings'.

If anyone is still watching this thread, let me update you.

I made all of the checks suggested in this thread (S3 enabled, no "wake on"
settings - in fact I completely disabled "Power Management APM" - whatever
that means).

But same thing happened - PC sleeps for a second then immediately wakes (BTW
I mean completely sleeps - power off - then "boom" - back on instantly!).

Help!

Bobby

Do you have a TV card? Those are really problematic, specially chinese. Try
to remove it and try.

Greetings!
