My PC freazes

Hi, can somone please tell me why when i play games and generally use my pc it can freaze for around 10secs
Is it because maybe there is a problem with my RAM or i need to defrag or somthing
I have a pentium 4,2ghz - 768 DDR 266 RAM - 80gig HD - XP Professional edition

Maybe you got big program or too many background program running while you
are playing.
