My Outlook suddenly started opening messages VERY slowly

I have had this computer for about a 1.5 months, running
Outlook XP on Windows XP. Within the last few days, I've
noticed that it takes a much much longer time for Outlook
to open a message in my Inbox when I double click on it.
Even a small text-only message that was already
downloaded and viewed: when I click to open it now, it
can take over 10 seconds.

I just did the MS Office "Detect and Repair" and also
the "Delete Unused Files" and "Defragment Disk", but
nothing helped.

What's going on, and how can I fix it?

Thank you thank you! Yes that helped! I was prompted
to install MS Messenger 6 this weekend at some point, and
I did it even though I never use it, because they said
there was a security risk. Maybe that 'upgrade' was part
of the problem? In any event, things are back up to
speed now.
