My Outlook 2003 registry is not correct

I recenty upgraded from Outlook Express to Outlook 2003...glad I did.

Shortly thereafter, I got an error message from Outlook stating that my PST
file was too big and that I had to delete some messages.

Why is there a max file size? And is it 2 gig? I would have thought I was
only limited by the size of my hard drive?

Anyway, I found this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=832925

It shows how to change the max file size to something larger.

But, as I dug down thru the hierarchy as explained in the article, I find
that my registry is not the same...I have complete folders that are
missing...I checked 3 times and got the same result.

What gives?

How can I change my max file size?

And is there another way, hopefully thru an addon or some such thing, to
change the max file size?

Thanks...

What kind of PST do you have? Is it a Unicode one or the older format? Check
here: Right click on root of your folders, choose Properties, click
Advanced. In the Format field you'll see either "Personal Folders File
(97-2002)" or "Personal Folders File". The 97-2000 format is limited to 2GB

Outlook is not an upgrade to Outlook Express but a completely separate
application. Outlook Express is part of Internet Explorer and Outlook is
part of the Office suite.

Sounds like you're using an old format (ANSI) PST, which does have a 2 GB
limit. Unicode PSTs (Outlook 2003's native format) have an initial 20 GB
limit and a theoretical limit of about 34 TB. You can verify the type you
have by right-clicking it, choosing "Properties" and then Advanced. There
will be a "Format" field there that will say either "Personal Folders File"
for the Unicode (new) format and "Personal Folders File (97-2002)" for the
ANSI (old) format. Of course, if you're using an IMAP account, the format
will always be the old format, alas.

To create a new PST, click File>New>Outlook Data File and choose the "Office
Outlook Personal Folders FIle (.pst)" selection, not the "Outlook 97-2002
Personal Folders File (.pst)" selection. When you've created the PST, make
it your delivery location (in the "Delivery new e-mail to the following
location" drop-down at the bottom of Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next) and then
move the data in the old PST to the new one. When you're all done,
right-click the old one and choose Close. You'll be able to delete it
completely the next time you close Outlook.

OK...I looked...it's the older format...but why would Outlook 2003 use the
older format? Shouldn't it default to the newer format?

I've been using Office XP, and then bought Outlook 2003 by itself...did
Outlook 2003 just keep using the same format of Office XP? Why wouldn't it
automatically upgrade the PST to unicode during installation?

Thanks...

P.S. I see in the next message how to change my PST to unicode.

Right, it's not an "upgrade"...I meant "upgrade" in the sense that Outlook
2003 obviously has more features than Outlook Express...I shouldn't have used
that word...sorry for the confusion.

OK...I see what you are saying...I created the new PST file (it has the same
name as the old PST file...confusing when they appear in the same drop-down
list...could I name it anything I want??

Also, is there anyway to select multiple folders to move to the new PST? I
have about 2 gigs to move, and a couple hundred folders...it's going to take
a LONG time to move them one by one.

And finally, Outlook 2003 will not let me move the INBOX, CONTACTS, and a
few other folders...how do I get those moved over to the new PST?

Thanks...

Certainly, and you're given that opportunity when you create it.

Alas, no. One at a time. But it's not so bad. Drag-and-drop.

If the new PST is already your delivery location, you'll need to move the
contents of the default folders. Open one (like Calendar), switch to a
category view, click one entry, press CTRL-A to select everything, and click
Edit>Copy to Folder or right-click the selection and drag it to the
destination folder.
