I am running windows 2000 pro and recently we had a
lighting storm that took out my modem,i bought a new modem
(INTEL HaM)and it does not work properly, can anyone help!
If you have you modem on a separate line without a handset, make sure the
phone line itself is OK. Always check all the hardware first.
In any case, you have a new modem, and Windows needs to be told about it.
(One of W2K's most irritating design flaws is it refusal to simply accept
new hardware when you decide to change it -- and sometimes even when you add
it. Any OS should be able to do that - at worst requesting installation of
new drivers. MS employees that are monitoring this NG -- are you
listening?????))
If this a Winmodem, there should be drivers with it (on floppy or CD).
Install the one for W2K. Uninstall the existing modem first.
If it's a "Hayes compatible" real modem, unplug it, uninstall the existing
modem, power down, plug in the modem, and reboot. Windows should find "new
device", and do its thing.
If neither of the above fixes the problem, you either have another bad modem
(unlikely), or you have more than a modem problem - that same lightning
strike may have fried a bit of your motherboard, too. In that case, aa
reliable technician is probably your best bet - even if all they can find out
is that you need a new mother board.
