Anyone ever see an odd entry in My Network Places for a domain that doesn't
exist? this is a single domain structure with nt4 domain controllers and
there is an xp client that appears as a domain/workgroup. I found a wins
record a few weeks back referring to this machine and deleted it.

The domain/workgroup name shows up as xivan with a little square next to it??

DNS doesn't really have anything to do with NetBIOS or the Browser service,
which is what the Neighborhood is based on.

If there is a machine out there with a workgroup name such as this, it will
be populated by either broadcasts, or from a WINS registration. You can use
the browstat command to determine what that record is.

Check your machines for a workgroup by that name.

Thx, I was just mentioning i have checked everywhere and can't find a
reference to this. I know we don't have any machines in a workgroup on the
network anywhere. Is it possible this is just an old record or do you think
there is something hiding somewhere?
Also, Basically what happened is I started working on this issue and found a
WINS record that was XIVAN and that record belonged to a client that was a
member of the domain as I tracked it down through dhcp.
I went to the machine and found that all the nic settings, machine stuff was
all fine.
Then I renamed the machine and the weird entry in network places appeared to
go away.
It is back and there is no trace of where it is coming from.
I haven't tried taking the machine out of the domain and then deleting it
from server manager and then rejoining the machine with even a new name.
I just checked server manager and the old name isn't there no matter which
view it is. I suspect that originally another IT tech joined the machine to
the network and the machine name was IVAN and I think that wins is adding the
X in front and that is why it appears in network places as XIVAN with a
little square next to it.

What switch with browstat would find this record? I tried and can't find it.
