Firstly, please do NOT post in all caps - it's the Usenet equivalent of
SHOUTING!
Go to Control Panel - Mouse and check the settings there.

This function is usually provided by the touchpad drivers. If this
worked before and suddenly stopped working:

1. Check the touchpad settings from the Mouse applet in Control Panel or
if your laptop mftr. provided a standalone touchpad configuration
program use that.

2. If changing settings works, you're done.

3. If the settings are the way you want them but the function doesn't
work, reinstall your touchpad drivers/configuration utility. Get them
from the laptop mftr.'s tech support website for your specific model
computer.

4. Make sure you don't have any other "hot key" type of software that is
interfering with the touchpad function. Ask yourself the First Question
Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?

5. If this was a sudden change and you don't know what you did, do a
System Restore to when things worked.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

6. If you are unable to fix this with software, perhaps it is a hardware
problem with the laptop keyboard/touchpad. Contact the laptop mftr.'s
tech report for repair/replacement.

I thought the pad was there to move the pointer, not to double-click?

Some of them have a tap function which does [something]. You have to set
it to do that, maybe just by enabling it in the Control Panel applet.

Normally there are buttons to the side of the pad that act like mouse
buttons. You don't tap the pad itself.

_____

Look in 'Control Panel' for 'Mouse'. Open 'Mouse'. There should be a tab
for 'Tapping'. Check the box to enable tapping. There also should be
settings.

It looks like your Caps Lock key is broken too.
