My mother-in-law, who lives accross the country from me
(thank god!) has an XP machine. I have a 98 machine. She
doesn't know that much about PC. She want to open a
digital picture file (I assume a jpeg or something like
that) and be able to enlarge the picture. I told her to
use the free Imaging program. But I just realized that XP
does not come with Imaging (but 98 does). What can she
use to open a digital picture and enlarge it. I told her
to try "paint" but she said she couldn't enlarge it in
there either.

There is a free PowerToy for WindowsXP that
allows images to be resized very easily:

Go to the following link and download and
install: ImageResizer.exe

http://tinyurl.com/36n

Then you can open any folder that contains
images and you will have an option to resize.
Just right click the selected image files and
choose Resize Pictures from the menu. You
can select one image or a whole group.

The program will place the resized copies in
the folder with your originals.
(Tip: *Never* overwrite your originals)

Also...try the excellent freeware IrfanView:

IrfanView 3.85
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
(get the plug-ins too)

For instructions...search the help files for "Resize".

Paint will enlarge, on the toolbar, Image, stretch & skew, not the best but it does
work.

Make sure she's aware that the more she enlarges with those tools, the worse
her pictures will look.

You may want to ask her if she really wants to enlarge them for good, or
just to zoom in on them. Zooming would retain the quality of the orignal
images. She can open the images in the Picture and Fax viewer, and hit the
zoom button (magnifying glass with a + sign in it) to zoom in on the image.
