I have no modem listed in my hardware. I was online the day before and the
next day I could not get online so I checked for something wrong with the
chords. No problems, but after checking my hardware under computer there is
no modem listed. I have DSL modem w/router connected via ethernet cable and
using Vista for maybe a year. No new hardware/software has been connected.

I use a cable modem rather than a DSL one, but I believe that if you're
using the Ethernet connection, no modem will be visible. You should just see
the NIC (network interface controller) in Device Manager.

Do you see the NIC? If not, you may have to re-install its drivers.

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I experienced a similar problem. A friend bought a new PC with Windows Vista
Home in January, I installed ATT DSL modem (motorola 2210) and everything
worked fine for about two weeks. Then Windows Update pushed software updates
and the internet connectivity was immediately lost. Not only that, but the PC
couldn't communicate with the modem anymore and apparently caused the modem
to lose the password/login information for getting on the internet. To
resolve the problem, I did a system restore to the restore point just prior
to the loss of connectivity, but the PC still wouldn't bring up the Modem's
IP address in IE. So I had to install the ATT DSL software on my laptop
(running XP Pro), connect to the DSL modem to 're-educate' it with the
password and login. Then I re-connected the modem to the Vista machine and
everything worked great. UNTIL.....MS pushed the update back to the PC and
caused the whole thing to happen all over again. So I'll repeat the steps
and this time turn off windows updater until I can figure out which update is
causing the problem and find a way to work around that.

I'm considering going with a cable modem, but wonder if that will have the
same problems.
