My IT dept sucks, now my security file is gone!

OK, I created a database in Access 2000 w/security. My cpu had a virus. My IT
dept ensured me that "ALL" files will be backed up. Silly me for believing.
Now my database is there and the security file is gone. Of course that
means, I do not have the necessary permissions. I don't have the backup of
the security file. I created the security file over a year ago and no longer
have the workgroup information (name, id, etc.).

Can anyone help with my problem? Thanks a lot

I would try a couple of things.

1. Try joining the default system.mdw and seeing if you have the necessary
permissions. You will log on as Admin and, if you missed any steps in the
process of implementing security, you should have full access to all
objects.
2. If that doesn't work, then try importing everything into a new, blank
database.

Thanks Lynn, but i tried those options. Unfortunatley I took all rights away
from the Admin account. Aren't I the smart one.

Your next option is to recreate the workgroup file using the exact same
information (user names, SIDs/PIDs, etc.) that you used to create the
original workgroup file. You did print and retain this information, didn't
you?

Did you mistakenly use the default workgroup file system.mdw to secure
the database?

If so, try creating a new default file /on the same PC/ & use that one.
(To create a new default file, try renaming the existing one & see if
Access recreates it when you start it next time.)

If not, make a note, for next time, to do what you already know you
should have done! That is, keep a seperate copy of the workgroup file,
or preferably, write down all the info that you need to recreate it.

You did read the OP didn't you? ;-p

Remember, you need the workgroup id information (to
re-create the Admins group) OR the information to
create a USER with sufficient permissions - either one.
You don't necessarily need to re-create the whole
workgroup file.

With the Admins group you can create a new user.
With a user you don't need the Admins group.
