i was just wondering if anyone knows why IE asks for a username/ password when you type you're own ip in the address bar? is it a type of remote access? and if it is, do i need to have a password setup to get in ,eventhough i dont have one for my admin account (i'm the only one using the comp.)?

By default, XP requires a password for network access--including network
file shares, network printer sharing, remote desktop, and I'm not sure what
else--

but i'm not in a network, it's just me and my cable modem, nothing else.is there a way to disactivate the password prompt.?

You are on a network--the Internet.

If you are experimenting with networkable features, you are better off
leaving the password requirement in place--suppose you choose at some point
to open the firewall on port 80--maybe to use Remote Desktop Web Connection?
