You sure the message really isn't about your driver not being Microsoft
[logo] certified but it still gives you the option to install it anyway?
*LOTS* of drivers and software are not Microsoft certified. It costs the
software developer money to hand off their goodies to Microsoft. It delays
delivery of their goodies in waiting until Microsoft eventually gets around
to certifying their goodies. So many don't bother, usually employ alpha and
QA testing, use something like Microsoft's application compatibility
toolkit, and release it when it is ready rather than pay Microsoft and delay
release of their product. So just click Continue (or whatever it is called)
and install anyway. Just be sure to check that the driver/software that you
are installing has qualified itself as Windows XP compatible.

Check the manufacturers web site. If no updates are available, update your
hardware. It will save you problems in the long run!

After several months of unremitting grief with a HP
OfficeJet 710 in an XP environment, I gained relief and
total satisfaction in the following manner (provided
there are "allegedly XP-compatible" drivers and software
available for download off the Internet, I cannot help
but believe that this technique will give relief to XP
users suffering with "old-timey" hardware aggravation):

(1) While logged on with administrative authority in
normal mode, go to START>SETTINGS>[CONTROL PANEL>]ADD OR
REMOVE PROGRAMS and uninstall all items obviously
supporting the targeted device and restart;

(2) Coming back up, go into SAFE MODE and log on as
ADMINISTRATOR, then adopting the EXPLORE approach, go
into every folder you can find obviously linked to the
targeted device and delete its contents (and the contents
of any sub-folders) - you may spare folder names if you
choose but nothing else (what you have succeeded in doing
here in SAFE MODE is erasing all traces of the lingering
98/98SE/ME legacies that can be eradicated in no other
fashion short of formatting the HDD); and after restarting

(3) Log on again with administrative authority in normal
mode, and perform a reinstallation of the targeted device
using only the modernized "allegedly XP-compatible"
drivers and software available (no matter the temptation,
under no conditions respond with legacy items of any
kind).

[NOTE: By forcibly removing all traces of the HP
OfficeJet 710 legacy software while in SAFE MODE, I now
enjoy flawless operation in XP Home Edition just as I did
in Millenium Edition on my Dell Dimension 8100 (and on my
Dell Dimension L400c running 98 Second Edition before
that).]
