Hello: Someone hit my computer, which resulted in my HD not powering
on any more. The power supply works with other HDs. The damaged unit
is a 160 Gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.9. What are my options when it
comes to rescuing the data in it? What do specialist do in these
cases? Transfer the cylinders to a new unit, or a similar
frankenstein technique? LOL. Forgive my ignorance about the matter.
Also, the scenario is probably a common one, so what kind of budget I
am facing here for such a service? Thanks in advance.

Eduardo.

It all depends on why it isn't "powering on". Can you hear any noises,
however soft? Is there any buzzing or vibration that would suggest
that the motor is trying to spin up? If so, then you may have a
stiction fault (heads stuck to platters) or a seized spindle bearing.

Presumably you have checked thats its not something as basic as the
power connector coming out.

Charge you a hell of a lot or money to work out why it isnt
powering on anymore, fix that, get the data off the drive.
Transfer the cylinders to a new unit,

Not even possible. And they are platters, not cylinders.

It isnt even possible to move the platters to a new unit.

Seagate will recover the data for you and you can then faint when they give you the bill.
or a similar frankenstein technique?

That can happen if its just the logic card that has died.

This is no laughing matter, boy.
Forgive my ignorance about the matter.

Its unforgivable.
Also, the scenario is probably a common one,

Nope, most have enough of a clue to backup the data that matters.

Thousands.

Eduardo mijo,

ive read from many sources as a last resort to temporarily fix a drive long enough to retrieve its data, you put the hard drive in a clear ziplock plastic sandwich baggy place it in a freezer all day and take it out plug it in !! this has worked for alot of people.. data recovery services can cost over $400usd , theres some services on ebay theyre for only unbricking/corrupt firmware. have you tried changing the jumpers to safemode? any detection on bios?
