Hi
I'm not sure if you can help me on this but I just got a new game called
"The Sims 2 University" and I try to play it and it works but then it freezes
and I have to press my windows button to get out of it. Well after that
happens two messages pop up and my system is completely messed up with the
colors and stuff and the message boxes are huge and blah blah blah. The
messages say that my graphics adaptor had an error and had to stop and it
doesn't say what the error was or anything it just says that. The other
message says my display driver had an error in it but I checked it and it was
perfectly fine. This is a brand new just made model of my computer and I'm
sure everything is up to date because I also checked on that and everything
is. Still the game keeps freezing on me and it continues to do so until I
find out what is going on here. So all I can think of is my graphics adaptor
or whatever. Have any suggestions?

Have you gone to the web site of your graphics card to see if there is an update
for your driver? Your computer, even though new, may not have the most current
driver.

Well,
I went to the website where it automically checks if my computer alone needs
any updates at all and it said everything is up to date already and that is
what is confussing me. I don't understand what the problem could be. I'm not
sure if I checked the graphics card web site yet though so I will try that
but if that is the same site as the other one I went to then I don't know. :s

I have gone to windows update site and it said eveything is fine if that's
what you meant by graphics card site. :s

You do not want to get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

You also need to check the system requirements on your Sims game to make
sure your video card is supported. If you are unsure about that, take the
information about the video card which you will find out in the steps above
and call Maxis tech support or look on their website.

No, Mary means the actual manufacturer's website like www.nvidia.com or
www.ati.com. However these two are not the only manufacturers of graphics
chipsets... there are several others as well.

You need to find the specifications of your particular PC and discover
exactly what is in it.... and then make sure it meets or exceeds the
specifications necessary to play The Sims 2... which does have high graphics
necessities.

Hello Kris,

To find out which video card you have on your system, you can do the
following (I'm assuming you have Windows XP installed)...

Go to the control panel, then double-click on the icon called 'System' -- if
you don't see this Icon (they're usually sorted alphabetically), click on the
'Switch to Classic View' sentence located on the upper left side of the
control panel -- this will switch to the classic view which contains the
'System' Icon.

Once the System Properties is opened, click on the 'Hardware' Tab located on
top.

Then click on the button called 'Device Manager' -- it's the first one on
the page.

Within Device Manager you will have an option called 'Display Adapters'
which contains the video card used by Windows XP. Open it to see what the
name of your video card is. I might say NVidia or ATI as part of the name...
if so, then visit the site (www.nvidia.com for NVidia cards) or www.ati.com
for ATI cards. Those sites have the links required for you to download the
latest drivers for your card (if indeed you have an ATI or NVidia card).

If your card isn't an ATI or NVidia card, and you still have problems
finding out how to download the proper drivers, let us know.

Good luck...
