please can someone give me some advise on how i should get it go read my CD-ROM

Any CD ROM or a particular one? Please Identify the title. Do music CDs
work? Does the disk show when you "explore" the drive in Windows
Explorer? Does the drive show when you "Explore" My computer in Windows
Explorer? Does the computer list the CD drive when the Power On Self
Test (POST) runs before loading Windows?

I have the same problem and don't know what happened. I've been running
WinXP for several months and have used the CD before. My DVD player works.
It shows up every where, but it never shows a CD in it and when I try to
open it nothing happens. When I insert a CD, the read light blinks but then
goes out.
Device Manager says its working properly.

Unfortunately the device manager can't be expected to verify that every
bit of hardware ALL the way to the lasers and photo detectors is
operating properly. If you can explore the file directories of DVDs but
are unable to either explore data/application CDs or play audio CDs you
may be experiencing a soiled component or a failure in the drive head
components.

If the computer can read other CDs there's a possibility the CD the
system can't read is dirty or scratched. Look at the bottom of the disk
to see if either of these conditions is obstructing the laser. If you
need to clean the disk wipe in a direction between the center and the
edge NEVER parallel to the edge. Avoid abrasive cleaners or chemical
solvents unless they are labeled as safe for polycarbonate plastics.
Kits for cleaning CDs and polishing scratches are available at many
chain music CD dealers.

A few games have Digital Rights Management functions that make them
incompatible with some drives or harder to read as the drives get older.

You misunderstood me. My CD recordable rewritable device doesn't do anything
except blink the read light when a CD is placed in it. It never plays or
records. Exploring it never shows any files in it, regardless what type of
CD is in it.
My DVD player is a separate device.

"Separate" as in another internal drive or "separate" as in an external
drive similar to those that connect to the computer with a USB cable?

If the drive appears in POST and Windows Explorer and you can't read ANY
CDs on it there's a pretty good chance you either need to clean the lens
or even replace the drive.
