My folders keep getting Write protected..

Hi..

I'm running Vista Home Premium - and my user account is an Admin-account.

My folders on my HD keep getting set as write protected - and when I change
it ( which is no problem ) - it changes it right back..

It's a problem for some programs, as I keep having to enter licence codes,
they don't "stick"

Same goes for my explorer - it doesn't maintain settings.

In games I cannot save..

How do I change the setting permanently?

Folders are neither 'read only' nor 'not read only'.
Note that the check box is neither checked nor blank, is is a filled 'not
applicable' box.
You cannot 'change' the read only attribute because that attribute does not
apply to a folder.

Well, that's not my problem - the problem is the write protection, that
prevents me from changing settings and saving in those directories.

As I wrote - I can change it - and the second I'm done - it changes back to
write-protected..
 
That behavior is normal and can not be changed. The folders are NOT write
protected, as you think they are. But you may have a permissions situation
with the folder.

So it's normal ? Hmm - what about my permissions then ? I have a
admin-account, so I should have all the permission I need ?

What can I do do to change it.. It's a problem with some of my programs,
that keep asking me to input license-codes, or continue unregistered..

How do I make my changes "stick" ?

There are folders that are protected by the system and NO program is allowed
to store data in those folders. This is a part of the new protection scheme
implemented in Vista. Some programs, such as QuickBooks (and other programs
by Intuit) are written incorrectly. They have been skirting good programming
practices for over 5 years now. Vista nailed them. Their programs can not be
made to work flawlessly with Vista.

Intuit knows this. They admit this. They also will NOT give free upgrades to
someone who purchased one of their programs even 6 months ago. You have to
pay full price for the version that is Vista compatible.

I am sure that there are other programs that have taken similar shortcuts as
Intuit.

Thx again - that explains it. Why it is only with some folders - not all..

updated.

If by Vista, you meant "NT 3.5.1" then you're correct -- The difference
is that Vista makes it harder on Administrators to write to incorrect
places.

Anyone following best practices (running a limited user) would have run
into this in the 90s.
