my floppy drive

when i insert a floppy disc it says it must formatt ,then after it says that a new box comes up saying it cant be formatted ,i know the floppy drives runs but just cant seem to get the disc to work in it ,
 
Some floppys have a write protection switch , a little black slider , on them , that could stop it formating .

Is it just that particular floppy disc, or all of them?
