My first PC Assembly

I decided it was time that I learn how to build a PC - a modest one
for an office I share.

I bought a Raidmax Zorro (aka Scorpio) case with 420 W power supply,
and an ASUS p4pe2-x motherboard.

Yikes! The 20-pin chassis is daunting, and the manual doesn't lay
things out simply.

Over the weekend, I"m going to try to figure out in what holes
I should plug with the leads from the front panel.

Thankfully, the leads from the case are labeled, but I cannot tell
where to plug most of the stuff into, except to match by color.

It's got to be easy, as I cannot find out much information -- if it
was difficult, it seems there would be lots of help articles.

How does one tell where to plug all the leads in (re: the 20-pin
chassis) ???

Clueless ( but determined to lear how to do it right ;)

PS: My home machine uses a recent p4p800, so I think I'll take a peak
to see what is plugged into what, although it has a different case
(Super Flower).

Look for the PANEL1 section of the manual. If your board didn't
come with a manual, you can get one from the Asus download page,
by typing in the model number. Select "All" from the pulldown
menu to see all downloadable files, including the manual.

There are six possible things to connect to the PANEL1 connector,
of which only four are useful. You will want to hook up a
Reset switch, a Power switch, the case speaker connection, and
the case front panel Power LED. In addition, on a separate header,
you will find room for an IDE disk activity LED. If the LEDs don't
light the first time, simply rotate the connector 180 degrees,
and try again. The LEDs won't be damaged. None of the wiring is
really that sensitive to how it is hooked up - just make sure it
is connected to the right set of pins. The LEDs can handle reverse
bias, if you connect them wrong the first time.

And, if that is too much for you, all you really need to get
started, is to hook up the Power switch. The rest can wait
for another day, if you want. (Although the other stuff is
convenient, you can get by without it.)

Most decent case wiring has labels printed on the ends of the
wires. The toughest part is figuring out an order to insert
the wires, so you can see what you are doing. You need to
be able to verify that you are not "off by one pin" when
installing PANEL1 wiring.
