My emoticons don't show up in my instrant messages

Whenever I add an emoticon to an IM, I see it until I send it. Then it turns
into the keystroke equivalent, although the receiver can see the emoticon.
When I receive one, it only shows up as the keystroke. What can I do to fix
this? I have IM 8.1.
