Had a problem with my system last night - actually started a few days ago
when it took forever to delete and send a simple text message with no
attachment in Outlook express. Then last night system hung so I rebooted and
got invalid system disk on reboot - had to recover sys files to C and got it
to reboot back to windows. All looked fine till I went to run explorer and
outlook again and the shortcut would not work - reinstalled both - know I
see that all "my documents" are gone and I have 1.5 mb more disk space. Also
looks like all MS office is gone - will not start up. Is there a virus going
around that would do that or did a section of my hard drive go for a crap??

unfortunately it has more earmarks of file system corruption than virus
infection...

Almost a Gb of excel files completly gone from file corruption??

no, file *system* corruption... there's a big difference... one affects
individual files, the other affects your entire drive...

if the data is important i'd suggest contacting a data recovery
professional - you probably can't get it all back but you might be able
to get some of it back... though the more you use that drive the less
you're likely going to be able to salvage...

I recently had a (somewhat) similar problem:

One night, my 30GB Primary IDE suddenly began to have /major/ seek
errors--Explorer showed some of the files/folders (albeit, after some lengthy
delay), but the data was not accessible. Other files/folders were just 'gone'.

There is nothing quite like waiting next to forever for next to nothing.

Upon re-boot, I started getting S.M.A.R.T. errors (which never went away, btw).

After about 8 chkdsk's and four days of waiting (the first three runs of chkdsk
were unsuccessful, and the following 'successful' runs of chkdsk took over 17
hours, each), I was able to retreive about 5 out of 10 GB of irreplaceable data.

The RAID mirror was corrupt, too (though the Secondary IDE was/is o.k.).

I still do not know to what degree the intensive session(s) of chkdsk affected
the remaining functionality of the drive, but I'm sure it did nothing to help
increase its lifespan.

No virus/worm warnings prior; nothing detected post.

Maxtor accepted the diag error code instantly, and sent me a free replacement in
three days . . . .

Don't write anything else to that disk/partition if you want a chance to get any
of the data back.

I'd say you HDD gone

hind sight's a bitch, though about backups?

No I'm not perfect, but I do try and burn the most important stuff to CD
once in a while

Adam

What would be the best way to verify this - chkdsk??
Find it strange that the directory's for most stuff are still there just
nothing in them.
