My Documents Hack

I want My Documents to be just "Documents" If I go into the registry
and change every instance of "My Documents" to "Documents", will that
work? And not trash my system?

Same goes for My Music, My Pictures ... etc.

Why don't you just highlight them, right-click and then select rename?

Hope that helps

YOU only have ONE My Documents folder.

%userprofile%\My Documents
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\My Documents

There are also these...
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\My Documents
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\My Documents

And if you have more than one user, each user will have a My Documents
folder.

My Documents gets its name from the desktop.ini file located in each My
Documents folder.

From the last line in %userprofile%\My Documents\desktop.ini

PersonalizedName=My Documents

I do not know what all you would screw up by changing that line or deleting
the desktop.ini file altogether. Besides what is mentioned below. I would
advise against it.
Same goes for My Music, My Pictures ... etc.

Desktop.ini files again.

PersonalizedName=My Music

PersonalizedName=My Pictures

PersonalizedName=etc.

Question: One of my special folders (e.g. My Documents, My Music, My
Pictures, Shared Documents, etc) has lost its name, lost its icon, or has
the wrong Task Pane template, how can I get it back?

Answer: This problem can occur if the hidden desktop.ini file in the special
folder is corrupt or missing. Here are the steps to fix this problem:

These are system folders. If you just rename them they will still be
set under the original names in the Registry so that other programs
will still default to My Documents, etc.

I would not advise just changing every My Documents entry in the
Registry as this will affect every current and future user. Suggest you
proceed as follows:

Create the folder(s) you want in the location(s) you want.
Open the Registry and navigate to your own profile setting for shell
folders here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

Look in the right-hand pane for 'Personal', 'My Music', 'My Pictures',
'My Video' etc. Right-click on each and change the name and path to
what you created earlier.
