I posted this a few days ago and Doug Knox posted to check in the registry
for a value. After going to my daughter's this morning the same value is
what Doug posted. Hey Doug, or anyone else, do you have another idea.

I looked in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

The value was: C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,

Hi, Denny.

It might be best if you look up your previous message, find Doug's post, and
click Reply, rather than New. That would "thread" your latest question to
the prior conversation. Your new message has started a new thread and
there's a good chance that Doug will never see it.

I notice that your message ended with a comma; did you perhaps send it
before you were finished with it? (That happens to me sometimes.)

Nevermind that last comment. My Registry also shows the value for Userinit
in that Key just as you quoted it: WITH a trailing comma after .exe.

RC

The value should be: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

and not: C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,

So proceed with the correction as Doug recommended.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look in the right pane for a value called "Userinit". It should read:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

If not, double click the Userinit value and change it. The comma at the end is intentional and necessary.
If your XP installation is on a drive other than C:, change the path accordingly.

Uh, Carey, if a user upgrades from Windows 2000, then the Windows folder remains WINNT. Additionally, some OEM's may direct that XP install to the Winnt folder for their images. Just a hold over, I guess, but I have seen it.

Denny,

Click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup tab and see if there is anything there that reference the users My Documents folder.

Additionally, in REGEDIT, go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Look for the "load" and/or "run" values. By default, these values, if they exist, should be empty. The load value, empty, exists on my system, but the "run" value doesn't.

Yep! My "boot folder" (also known as WinDir and as SystemRoot) is D:\WinNT.
I had upgraded from WinNT4 to Win2K, and then from Win2K to WinXP, so the
folder name was "inherited" each time. When I clean installed a second copy
of WinXP on another volume, that boot folder was named X:\Windows. To see
what your settings are, one way is to open a "DOS" window and type Set.

That's what I thought too Doug. This is an OEM install from Gateway! Any
ideas of how to stop this from having the "My Documents" folder open on
startup. Sorry about the new thread on this.

Thanks for the response Doug. I will try these and get back to you.
