My Dimension 9100's hard drive keeps running, programs run very sl

About one Mo. ago my system started using the hard drive all the time unless
i run in safe mode. I have run McAfee, Symantec and Trend Micro scan
programs. They don't help. What else can I do.

Do you have a program that is * backing up * everything you do on the
computer ? ( Some office programs *backup* every x minutes )
 
Thank You for the idea.
I have not added any new programs in over a year and none of my programs
make backups when they are not running. My hard drive is running even when
no apps are on and I turn off McAfee and other backround programs.
 
Indexing, as in win or a desktop search app?
