I am running Windows XP on a Dell Latitude D610. It is the home edition.

Interestingly, when I open My Computer, the flashlight (search) symbol
appears and the page is blank for about 15-20 seconds. This is new. Any
ideas?

In my experience, this usually happens when I have drive letters
mapped to some network storage somewhere that isn't available at the
time. Explorer spends time trying to access the mapped drive to
validate it. Unfortunately I don't know how to turn it off.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How much RAM memory? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop
and select Properties any you will find the information on the General
tab.

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on your
C drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties to get this
information.

Do you leave the computer on 24/7?

Hope this helps.
