I'm using WMM to capture video from my JVC which records in miniDV. Whenever
I connect the camera to the computer with the iLink and put it in the vcr
mode WMM says that it does not recognize it.

Am I connecting it wrong? Do I need the camera in another mode besides VCR
or do I need another program?

You are connecting it correctly and no you don't need another program.
It is probably either a problem with the firewire cable or card.
Take the camera and cable to your local computer store and ask them to try
it on one of their computers.
If it works with your cable then the card in your computer is probably bad.
If it doesn't but it works with their cable then you need a new cable. If it
doesn't work with their cable then it could quite possibly be the firewire
port on your camera but don't get too excited yet because it is more likely
than not just a bad cable.

Ok, I've tried two different cables on three different computers all with WMM
and it just doesn't recognize the device. Should I be using something
different than the USB port on the camera? Should I be using the DV port? Or
could it just be the camera? I'll be going to a computer store soon.

Sorry, been busy lately.
The USB port sometimes works sometimes doesn't but the DV port is the best
option regardless.
The firewire connection through the DV port is faster and more reliable plus
it allows you to capture your video as a DV-AVI which you cannot do with the
USB connection.
