Windows XP Home Edition... Okay.

- Service pack level?...
- Running on an 400MHz processor with 64MB memory and a 10GB HDD with less
than 50MB free space?...
- Last full AntiVirus scan was performed on?... (with?...)
- Last full AntiSpyware scan was performed on?... (with?...)
- Hardware drivers are all current from the manufacturer of each component
(not Microsoft updates)?...
- Last disk cleanup and defragmentation was perfomed on what date?...
- How many startup programs are loading?...

( In other words - more details, please. ;-) )

Apologies for not supplying enough details.

Windows XP home edition service pack 2 (build 2600)
3.20 gigahertz intel pentium 4
250.05 gb usable hard drive capacity
233.06 gb hard drive free space
antivirus full scan with McAfee today.
defraged and disk clean up performed this last weekend.
msconfig tells me there are 18 programs starting up
I found one driver for my creative webcam that I updated

not sure what other information to provide.

thanks for your help

The number of autostarting programs is not important. *Which* programs
they are is what's important.

How much RAM do you have?

Is this behavior new, or has it always been slow to start?

If it's new, what have you changed recently?

Is it just slow in starting or is it slow in everything it does?

I have 512 mb ram

this is a new problem, the only thing I have changed is the webcam, but if I
am honest I can not remember if it was slow starting before i added it or
after, I have updated the driver for it, creative vista webcam.

What errors appear in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

I also have a program called spybot
Do you also have TeaTimer? TeaTimer runs all the time, but Spybot does not.
I got rid of TeaTimer because I became very tired seeing its nagging

You didn't answer the question "Is it just slow in starting or is it
slow in everything it does?"

My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it
takes to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is
otherwise satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most
people start their computers once a day or even less frequently. In
the overall scheme of things, even a few minutes to start up isn't
very important. Personally I power on my computer when I get up in the
morning, then go get my coffee. When I come back, it's done booting. I
don't know how long it took to boot and I don't care.

Also tell us *which* programs start automatically.

Note that McAfee, along with Norton, is one of the worst and
worst-performing anti-virus programs that exist. That could be a good
part of your problem.

And you mention scanning for viruses, but you say nothing about what
anti-spyware protection you use. Spyware is responsible for a good
part of the performance problems you se around.

What is the status of "Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader service"?
Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Is it listed?

Windows Live Messenger is looking for it during the boot process and not
managing to start the Service. Do you use Windows Live Messenger?

Sorry, Gerry. I'm lost and don't know what you're referring to. I
don't see a reference to SMSsystemAnalyzer in what you quoted below.
Besides, I'm not familiar with it.

I have followed your instructions, and I have found "Messenger Sharing USN

this be the problem ? and I do use live messenger.

SMSsystemAnalyzer

No comment Ken on this?

I would have expected "snake oil" at least <G>!

Sorry, Gerry. I'm lost and don't know what you're referring to. I
don't see a reference to SMSsystemAnalyzer in what you quoted below.
Besides, I'm not familiar with it.

Change the start-up type for the "Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader
service" to manual. Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools,
Services. Right click on "Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader service",
select Properties, General tab and using the scroll change the
Start-Up type to manual and click on Apply and OK. Restart the computer.

Does the computer boot quicker? Is there still an error in Event Viewer
for the latest boot?

Hope this helps.

Gerr,

I have dont as you suggested, changed the start up to manual rebooted and
checked the event viewer, the appears to be no errors in either application
or system on the last boot, however the start up is exactly the same length
of time, I thought you had it there.

thanks for you help to date it really is appreciated.
