I have windows XP and over the past week it's begun to
adapt characteristics of windows 98. the university help
desk was...helpless as usual and it keeps getting worse.
first my start button wasn't green and bubbly but gray and
square. now the font is Arial, my whole taskbar is gray,
and my start menu is your standard windows 98 format.
does anyone know what the hell this is and more
importantly HOW TO FIX IT?!?! i'd really appreciate it,
thanks

Sounds like you have the Classic start menu option enabled. Right click the
Start button and select properties. You will see that option at the bottom
of the dialog.

I know--except we tried to get it off of classic and
there's not even an XP option anymore. it ownt' switch.
we created a new user an dlogged on in case it was jsut my
account--no dice. it was classic on that account too.
also, my computer still pretends to be XP (looks pretty
stupid how on my rudimentary menu it says windows XP) so
yeah i don't know

Anytime I start getting weirdness, the first thing I do
is a system restore. Nice thing about XP is they put
system restore right on the start menu. I just go in and
set a restore date back to a time I knew it was working.
It's pretty basic, but worth a try. Or have you tried PC
Doctor diagnostic? Both are easy to do, might work, and
won't hurt anything if they don't.

Good luck.
(Or, maybe that's the problem! It somehow started doing a
System Restore ... to 1998! ;)
