My computer is possessed. Random lockups, restarts, you name it, its done it

I've told this story so many times...but here goes one
more. My computer was fine until about a month ago. Then
it started to restart by itself, no error msg, nothing.
And it would do it at totally random times, whether i was
in a game, or in internet explorer. Well it did this a
couple times, then one time, when it was starting back
up..it said something like... Windows/system/config is
corrupt, and that i needed to use the windows cd to repair
the installation. Well i formatted, and installed windows
again. It still restarts, and then after a couple times, i
get the windows/system/config is corrupt again. So I
format again, and this time, my buddy tells me i need to
unpartition, and re-partition it. It wasn't partioned into
2 parts, just one big part..when u go to install windows,
it tells you about disk partions..smart guys will know
what im talking about. So i did that, and it didnt do the
config is corrupt thing anymore, but it still restarts
randomly, and locks up randomly. SO, my buddy (who built
the computer) said to take it over to his house, and since
he has the same motherboard as me, he would try each
component of mine on his motherboard, and see if it
worked. Well he did, and all of them worked, so he
said, "Well, has to be the motherboard" So we got a new
motherboard, he put it in, and he tests it out...running
good. We didnt activate a log in screen, so if it did
restart, it would still pop up to the desktop, So we
aren't SURE if it restarted or not, but it didnt restart
in front of us, which is impossible now, because it
restarts at least once every 15 minutes now. BUT, back to
the story...So i think its working..well then i bring it
to college, hook it up...start playing..and BOOM restart.
There are some worms on campus, so i thought..well, could
be a worm. So I told the ITS people on campus, and they
thought it was a worm too. So i took it to them, they put
their copy of symantec anti-virus, give it back to me, and
said it is running fine. So i take it back to my dorm, and
starting playing games, BOOM restart. I talked to the guy
at the head of ITS, and he said to look at the event log,
to see what it was doing. So i did...and I saw there was a
DHCP error, that the computer was trying to get another
IP, after it was on the net already. So i figured that
this was it..but we couldn't figure out why it was doing
it. So he said to get ad-aware to remove stuff, and i did,
and it removed some stuff, but it didnt fix it, still
restarts. So then i looked at the event log again, and i
noticed that even tho the DHCP error is listed BEFORE
the "event log start," its TIME is AFTER..like a second
after. SO, i tried just restarting it normally, and the
error pops up everytime i restart it normally too. SO, im
thinking that the restart causes the DHCP error, not the
other way around. So now I am about out of
options...someone told me could be the ram..my buddy didnt
say whether he checked the ram or not, but I did run a
memory checker from windows that supposedly checked the
memory..I did that b4 i got the new motherboard..I think.
So there is the saga of my computer, its so frustrating, I
know a lot about computers, and I cant think of why its
doing the things it does. OHOH, one more thing. I have a
Logitech MX700 wireless mouse, and yesterday, it stopped
working. So i unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it
said something about the USB malfunctioning. So i
restarted, mouse worked fine, then it restarts by itself,
and it comes back, and says it was caused by a device
driver. I have gotten this msg b4 when it restarts, but
NOT lately. I got this driver msg with the old
motherboard, not with the new one. But there are no
conflicts on my machine. I HAVE gotten blue screens of
death...maybe 4 times out of the billions of restarts, and
when i do get them, it says the error
is, "IRQ_NOT_LESSOREQUAL" what does that mean? Is that
causing the problem? HELP ME HERE, im out of ideas...

I have a similar problem except mine is a laptop so it
makes it harder to replace components etc. What you should
check is the fans in the comp and then the power
supply.Get a good diagnostic programe let it run in the
background it might turn up something. And last start
researching like im doing cos ive posted here a few times
and no one seems to answer except the odd idiot who tells
me useless information.

LOL, I already replaced the power supply...I thought that
it was a power issue, so I upped the power supply..from
300 to 450..no difference. I only have a few fans..one on
the processor, one on the power supply, one bridge fan on
the mboard...and 2 built in ones in my video card..and
that's all i think. My hard drive seemed fairly hot one
time...I havn't really touched it a lot. Do u know a good
diag program?

Your problem is very simple!! When your friend took all
of your parts out and tested them, I think he forgot to
test the motherboard in his case. There for you have left
out the power supply. Your power supply is having power
drops and spikes. When this happens, the system will
reboot. I find that allot of people will test things out
of a computer that is having problems but never check the
power supply.

This will be your pain, your power supply!! It may not
just be the power supply, "Weak power supply" it very
well could be the power that it is getting from the plug
in in your dorm. Allot of things are on those lines,
things being turned on and off and can cause power drops
and spikes, just enough for a computer not get the stream
of power that it needs. Just the littlest bit will cause
it to boot. This is from a weak power supply. The power
supply is made to handle things like this, but if it is
old, then it is weak.

Please email me and let me know what you find out and if
this helps you any.
You may email me at (e-mail address removed)

I hope you get things running soon.

Have you tested the temperature inside the case and on the video card
right after if reboots? If the temperature gets too high it will reboot
without any messages. Try leaving the side off the case and blowing a
fan at the hottest area and see what happens. You should have a couple
of case fans (one in front blowing in and one at the back blowing out)
to cool off the components.

hey there...sorry for the woe's of your computer, but
have you gone into the control panels -> system then
click on "Advanced" tab, Then click on the "Settings"
button in the "Startup and Recovery" area (should be the
last groupbox on the page). Clicking the settings button
brings up another interface that has a checkbox option
that if checked restarts your computer when a program
perferoms an illegal opperation...uncheck the box and
your all set. Well, at least windows wont reboot on you
when a driver fails...which is what is my guess.
