My computer hangs on "Searching for items" as Administrator user

Recently, when I double click on "My Computer" the window opens, the message
"Searching for items" (or something like that) appears in the Status bar and
the torch appears in the window - then nothing more happens. When I shut
the window down after a while I get a "not responding" dialog. I have the
same problem when I try to access C: or D: in the IE window. This problem
only happens when I am logged in as an Administrator user, not as an
unpriviledged user or in Safe Mode. I have tried two system restores, and
have uninstalled the latest NVidia driver and a Virtual CD program, but the
problem still occurs.

I am running Windows XP SP 1 and IE 6.0 (on help->about its
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920).

Can anybody help?

Hi,

When you click Start and then click My Computer, or when you double-click My
Computer on your Windows desktop, Windows may search (a flashlight may
appear) for a long time (for example, 5 minutes) before files appear.

Disable the Windows Image Acquisition service.

Thanks - works a treat. Does this remove any of the functionality of my
scanner? I seem to be able to acquire images from scanning software and
when I hit the "scan" button on my scanner the usual popup appears on my
screen when I am running as a nonpriviledged user. It all seems fine at the
moment.

I must say I'm very impressed by the quality of the answers and speed of
replies in these MS newsgroups

Robert.

Hi Robert,

I could not duplicate the problem. So, not sure if it will affect the
scanner functionality. It is best advisable to create a restore point first.

It's because they are a global effort! Mr. Ramesh is going strong while the
"other side" is sound asleep.
