My Computer doesn't assign drive number

The external drive may not be formated. Many do not come formatted, becasue
these could be used on a MAC or a PC or even LINUX. Use the device manager,
disk management console to partition and format. I believe that XP uses
jargon something like "initialize" to mean partition.
