0) Verify that you have speakers properly connected to the computer, and
that they are powered on (if applicable).
1) Check that your AC'97 is the default audio device (in Control Panel |
Sounds and Audio Devices).
2) Check there that the Volume icon appears in the System Tray.
3) Double-click on that Volume icon, and check that all relevant sliders
(for playback) are set above zero, and that none of these are checked
"Mute".
4) If still no sound, check in Control Panel | System | Hardware | Device
Manager that these drivers are causing no problem, and that the device has
not been disabled.

Hi Chris
Thanks but have done all of that and loaded new drivers. Nothing.... There
is no system sound at all.
Too worried to open BIOS and check there....

Don't concentrate too much on these latest drivers. And if you do, make sure
that they are compatible with XP, not just Vista. (The architecture of Vista
is different in the very fields of audio and graphics handling.)

Little chance that the BIOS will solve your problem, unless you have
disabled the sound card there.

You have now narrowed "no sound" to "no system sound". By "system sounds"
Windows means the sounds intended to draw your attention upon opening or
closing programs, making choices, receiving mail, ... These are organized in
"schemes", and you must select a scheme to have system sounds. You still
won't hear any unless in that scheme sounds have been associated with
events. This is maintained in Conrol Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices |
Sounds.

If the problem persists, it is likely due to something tiny, like having the
loudspeaker plug not fully inserted or inserted in the microphone connector,
having the volume turned to zero on those speakers, or something of that
magnitude. Can't judge that from here! :-)

Hi Chris
Thanks for all your help.
There was no sound, either system sound nor loudspeaker.
The problem is solved now, it was the guys who put the computer together.
They forgot to connect something .... When I first called them they said that
the had it tested and the problem has to be somewhere else. Well I brought
the CPU in and they found that little part not properly connected.....

Re-install your sound card drivers.

Cheers,
Jerry
