I have Windows Vista Premium and have not been able to check for updates
since december 2007, i have now only just noticed as i need to install a
program that requires me to have service pack 1. When i open windows update
it searches for ages and then brings up a variety of error messages, some are
the ones relating to the firewall and internet connection and i can still
access the internet and i have allowed the site, i have even gone as far as
to disable the firewall but it still will not work. Does anyone have any idea
what to do i am getting really annoyed

To manually install SP1 by using the Microsoft Download Center

1. Depending on whether you are running the 32-bit
(http://tinyurl.com/ywb4al) or the 64-bit version
(http://tinyurl.com/2jvzw9) of Windows Vista, download the update for 32-bit
versions or download the update for 64-bit versions.

To determine whether you have the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Windows
Vista, click the Start button Picture of the Start button, right-click
Computer, and then click Properties.

To install SP1 immediately, click Open or Run, and then follow the
instructions on your screen. To install SP1 later, click Save to copy the
installation file to your computer. When you are ready to install the
service pack, open the file you copied to your computer.
1. Follow the instructions on your screen. The computer will restart
several times during the installation.
2. After Setup is complete, log on to your computer at the Windows logon
prompt. You will receive a message indicating whether the update was
successful.
