It might well be a virus, or it might just be Internet Explorer at its very best (only kidding).

To get rid of the toolbar, have you tried opening IE > View > toolbar and then deselecting the one you don't want?

As for the pop-ups, do you have PopUp Blocker activated? Try looking in Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and then activating the "PopUp Blocker" option at the bottom. Alternatively, if you use GOOGLE you could use the blocker which is built into their toolbar. I prefer this option and find it very effective.

Lastly, do the crashes follow a spate of popups, or is there any other pattern? It could be a virus, or something else going on in the O/S.

Try these option and let us know how you get on. Its possible that switching on the blocker may help.

Good luck.

Hi Henkjan

May I ask what AV or AS software you have/are using and whether these are run regularly/show anything untoward? Please consider my response as complementary to that of CITech.

If you could let us know the answer to mine and CITech's questions plus what OS you are using/your specs then we will do our best to help you.

Gabs xx

Try SpySweeper

Try Downloading and installing SpySweeper from Webroot. Following is the link for SpySweeper. www.spysweeper.com ... try to d/l and install a Trial Version of SpySweeper. Its an award winning software. I would also advice you to uninstall Spyware Doctor. The trial version of SpySweeper is for 14 days after which you will be prompted to upgrade the subscription. Also for your reference you can go thru the screenshots for SpySweeper http://www.geocities.com/djchrisquad/spysweeper.html ... I am sure that if u have SpySweeper on your system then u would not require a Spyware Doctor or any other similar program. SPYSWEEPER is the Best ... Try it and do post the feedback ...

I'd do a massive spyware scan, although Mucks is right if your computer is really messed up - a fresh install is the way to go.

Try downloading Microsoft AntiSpyware and then reading these articles:

https://www.pcreview.co.uk/articles/Internet/Spyware_and_Adware_Removal/
https://www.pcreview.co.uk/articles/Windows/Protection_against_Adware_and_Spyware/
i tryd this a thousend times.. but it says something about a validation key?
and i have norton antivirus 2005 and it works fine.
hmm weird.
when i run a scan with spysweeper it doesend show how many files it scanned..
and when i press stop scanning it crashes and when i try to do anything it crashes alsow

Mmm, that's different!

Are they pop-ups from a particular piece of software or site. Yahoo, RealPlayer etc often have their own messenger windows appears. If it is this sort of thing you need to look into the individual programs and de-select these options.

The only blockers I know work with web browsers, so if you are getting this problem when the browser is shut I do't think they will help. Just one thought, do these pop-ups occur after closing your browser or before? This might have a bearing.

Let us know.

The PC is heavily infested and needs a clean install.

;)

Hi Mucks

That was sorta what I was thinking but wanted to check out what Henkjan had currently i.e. AV/AS etc...... I am not sure we clarified that point but if I've missed it, forgive me....

That's the line of thought / comment I was coming round to. I checked this guy's previous posts and he seems to be experiencing a lot of problems. Poor guy, looks like a few more hours at the keyboard with a stack of discs!

CITECH Edit: Sorry Gabs, looks like I jumped on your back. (You know what they say about great minds thinking alike!)

I do symapthise with the poor guy - I have been there big time as others on this site will know but I was thinking that unless you have a 'baseline' i.e. know what AV/AS people have on their machines and other basics, it feels a bit like a stab in the dark.

Henkjan - do you know how to do a clean install or will you need help???

No forgiveness necessary folks ... your just trying to help as we all are. :thumb:

Messers henkjan's system is beyond 'fixing', but cannot see that, and needs to do a clean install.

So as not to cause anymore confusion I'll close this thread. ;)
