Hi,

i got a new cd for xmas and i cant get it to play on windows media player. when i put the disc in, windows media player says 'insert a disc'.
i've tried re-inserting it and restarting the computer but this doesnt seem to work!

if if go into 'my computer' and into the cd drive i can click on a symbol which looks like a 'd' and 's' in a grey square called 'player' and this plays the disc but not thorugh windows media player.

any help on how to play it through windows media player would be much appreciated, as i would like to download the songs onto my computer so i dont have to keep inserting the disc,

thanks,
leanne

Try opening one of the .cda files. They should open in the default CD player
application.

Thanks for replying! but i havent got a clue as to what a .cda file is let alone how to open one!! could you possibly give me a few instructions as to how i should open one? thanks again,

Once the CD is in your CD drive, open Windows Explorer. Click on the + sign
next to "My Computer," and then click on your CD Drive. This *should*
display a series of .cda files in the pane on the right. The .cda files are
the music tracks on your CD. Double-click on one of them to open (play) it.
If this doesn't work, you may have a copy-protected CD which has been rigged
to be unplayable on your computer. One work-around for this is to hold down
the Shift button when you first insert the CD.

HTH,
Ian.

thanks for your advice, i tried what you said but going through windows explorer didnt work so i tried holding the shift key when i put the disc in and it started to play but it just keeps freezin!

i suppose iv got a copy protected one and its just not going to work!

Is there a compact disc logo anywhere on the disc, or the case? If not, then
the disc you have is not an actual CD, and should be returned to the store for a
refund.

I agree- it's the only way we'll be able to dissuade the music industry from
employing such tactics. But it's also a nice touch to be able to
successfully rip the CD prior to returning it...

Ian.
