Hi

I hope someone can help me. In august my DVD player
apparently malfunctioned and caused major problems in my
system and I had to bring it to a computer repair place to
get fixed (i didn't replace it though) Just today I tried
to listen to a cd on my cdrom and it didn't play (even
though the lights are on and it makes a whirring noise as
if it wants to play) i looked in My computer and saw that
the icon for the CD drive was missing.

i searched my Event Logs in the Adminstrative section,
and found 1 error entry from yesterday listed by the Plug
and Play Manager:

"The Device Atapi CdR/RW 16x10 (IDE\CDROM Atapi
CDRW_17x10_____________G.IF________\5&e83c38a&0&0.0.0_)
disappeared from teh system without first being prepared
for removal. "

What does this mean? At the time of the error, I had
not been home but the computer was on running a defrag
program from my System Suite utilities program. I don't
know if that had anything to do with it. I tried System
restore to restore the points to before the time of the
error, but to no avail. I hope someone can help me, i
can't be without a cd-rom drive, especially since my dvd
drive is already defunct, i don't want to buy a new set!
Thanks!

Hi Gina Left with No Drive;

Suggest you save and print now.

Can't stand a woman left with so little drive so will spend a few minutes
around to try and boost you to par.

Seems like it's time to check if the BIOS can still detect and hopefully
activate the "2 missing-in-action but still-there-in" drives.
We are not talking about the XP status here.
Just about the drives.
If things incite/excite us then we'll push things further.
It could all be to no avail but you'll know the whole truth.
****************

Turn OFF, reboot and accesss the bios.

Instructions as to how will appear/flash on screen. Use [Pause-Break] key
and proper timing of best finger to decipher. The [Enter] key speed things
up again.

Navigate to second or third page to change the booting order: make a **CD
unit the #1 booter (never the floppy drive)

**: the lower letter is generally the better choice
--------
while
taking the hard drive off the list
and
time to insert your bootable XP install CD-ROM disk

IMP'T NOTE: It may take more than 1 try
++++++++++ ==================
as you may have to fiddle with all of the available/possible combinations
(minus the hdd(s) and floppy) to hit the ONE but it will at least show and
tell the real status of the 2 CD drives.

Example:
======
Boot from 1st CD: Enabled
2nd CD:disabled
Boot other device: Enabled (if there at all)
could be it.
Trial and Error Game is ON.

Save/accept/reboot (with the CD in there).

If it boot by itself from any of the 2 CD drives or at least a "press any
key/enter within15 seconds message appear."..well... then "REPAIR" the XP
installation is your road to a fonctional PC if...

Don't get fancy: Just repair for now if you choose while knowing/remembering
that if it can read from the XP CD-Rom ==>CD Drive=not dead.

Apply needed(!) updates/patches afterwards.

I'll wager 54 cents on you as odds against "2 really down and completely
out" are one-legged.

Anyway, it's "that" or the SHOP!
?
Time for the adventurous?

The booting needs be readjusted later.

Mikey

Hi Mikey

Thanks for your attempt- still nothing! BIOS isn't
detecting the cd-rom either; when i try ti change the
booting order, the CD-rom isn't even an option, i just
have Floppy, IDE, and Disabled. Last i looked before this
all happened, a CD-rom drive had been an option. AARRGG!
I have a feeling this baby is going back into the shop...

Best guess is that when you had the machine in for repair
on your other drive that the cabling on the cd was not put
back on firmly and has worked loose. If you are up to
cracking open the case you can check for the power and ide
cable to the cd drive and see if they are firmly seated.
Otherwise you will be going back to your repair shop...
