My appointments reminder not appearing automatically when booking.

When I create a new appointment in my Calendar it doesn't automatically put a
tick in the reminder box. On other peoples machines it does - i cannot seem
to find anything that allows this to happen.
 
Do you have a default reminder set in Tools | Options | Preferences tab |
Calendar section?
